Guinea pigs are intriguing and unique pets whose traits make them very different from other rodents and pets. Let's look at their various characteristics to see why they are such interesting, loveable pets.

Senses

Cavies have very poor eyesight, and so they tend to use their other senses much more to compensate.

Their senses of touch, smell, and hearing are much more developed, allowing them to find their way around their environment quickly and easily, sniffing out food and avoiding predators.

Physical Agility

Guinea pigs have very large bodies and short legs, which means they are not particularly nimble. They can run quite quickly, but they are very poor at dealing with obstacles, and can't climb steep slopes. Because of this, you should try to give them a cage with a single level wherever possible.

On the other hand, they are excellent swimmers, and travel quite large distances. Having said that, they will only take to the water when their life depends on it, and should never be forcibly put into water, as this can make them scared.

'Talking'

Cavies communicate using a range of squeaks, chatters, and purrs. Each sound has its own meaning, which helps you get to know your pets and decipher what they want.

You may also notice that your guinea pigs make a singing sound which sounds a lot like a bird. No one is sure exactly what this means, but it is wonderful to listen to.

Intelligence

Guinea pigs have a very good memory, and can memorise a route through a maze for several months. They are also able to remember who their owners are, which is a wonderful feeling and leads to a very strong bond between you and your animals.

Anxiety

Guinea pigs are naturally timid pets, and can be scared by loud sounds. As a result, try to approach their cage carefully, and don't make any loud sounds near them. If your pets do get scared, speak to them in a soothing, gentle voice to help them calm down.
